The second annual Iowa NAFSA International Education Conference will take place Friday, April 25, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus. This conference will be similar to a regional NAFSA conference in that representatives from all facets of international education will be in attendance, but the conference will be unique in that it will be specifically for Iowa.
Ask anyone who has ever studied abroad about the experience, and they'll say it changed their life. Turns out, international study actually changes students' brains. Going overseas, said Yuliya Kartoshkina, a doctoral student at the University of North Dakota, "rewires the brain."
International students and scholars at the University of Iowa contributed more than $101 million toward the state of Iowa’s economy last year, according to data recently released by the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors (NAFSA).
NAFSA reports that in academic year 2011-12, international students and their dependents contributed approximately $21.81 billion to the U.S. economy. More than $306 million of that total came from Iowa universities, and while the UI’s international student and scholar population wasn’t the highest of the state universities, the economic impact of UI students exceeded that of the two other state universities combined.
During the past decade higher education’s interest in internationalization has intensified, and the concept of civic education or engagement has broadened from a national focus to a more global one, thus expanding the concept that civic responsibility extends beyond national borders.
As Schattle (2009)i points out, the concept of global citizenship is not a new one; it can be traced back to ancient Greece. But the concept and the term seem to have new currency and are now widely used in higher education. Many institutions cite global citizenship in their mission statements and/or as an outcome of liberal education and internationalization efforts. Many have “centers for global citizenship” or programs with this label.
