University of Iowa alum Aaron Sinift, creator of 5 Year Plan in collaboration with Gandhi Ashram spinning and weaving collectives in India and 26 artists from 7 countries, will be speaking at the UI Thursday, February 28, 2013, at 5 p.m. in 1117 University Capitol Centre.
While many of us took time to relax and unwind over the holiday break, Professor Joann (Jo) Eland, PhD, RN, FAAN, was scrambling to finalize international travel plans while prepping to instruct a class that provides vital hospice and palliative care overseas.
On December 29, Dr. Eland and a group of 18 students (11 from the College of Nursing) embarked on multi-day journey that took them from Iowa City, to Chicago, to Abu Dhabi and ultimately to their final destination—a hospice in Trivandrum, India, a city located in the Southern tip of the country—where Eland taught a three-week course titled “Hospice, Pain and Palliative Care.”
University of Iowa senior women's golfer Gigi DiGrazia was intrigued by an email she received last August for a class offered over winter break called “Diagnosing Diseases.”
DiGrazia, a health and human physiology major, wants to attend medical school, so this was right up her alley. The class would be worth three credits, offered over three weeks during winter break, and students would be working hands-on with doctors and physicians in diagnosing illnesses and other medical situations.
The number of international students enrolled at the University of Iowa hit an all-time high this fall, and the increase from last year was more than double the national rate. There are 3,571 international students at UI, up 14 percent from the 2011-2012 academic year, in which there were 3,130 international students.
International students and scholars at the University of Iowa contributed more than $101 million toward the state of Iowa’s economy last year, according to data recently released by the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors (NAFSA).
NAFSA reports that in academic year 2011-12, international students and their dependents contributed approximately $21.81 billion to the U.S. economy. More than $306 million of that total came from Iowa universities, and while the UI’s international student and scholar population wasn’t the highest of the state universities, the economic impact of UI students exceeded that of the two other state universities combined.
This presentation discusses the effects of India's 2005 Patents Act on the control of medical knowledge and products in India. This new law, which conforms to the World Trade Organization's intellectual property conventions and discontinues India's prohibition of product patents for medicines, is having complex and unintended effects on the production of biomedical pharmaceuticals by Indian drug manufacturers and the products and practices of Ayurveda, India’s indigenous medical system.
Professor, author, and researcher Ann Grodzins Gold will give a lecture Thursday, Oct. 25, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in 2390 University Capitol Centre (the Executive Board Room) discussing the cultural impact on an Indian community of losing a river of great spiritual importance. The talk is titled, “From Snakes' Blood to Sewage: Mythology and Ecology of a Minor River in Rajasthan.”
University of Iowa junior Jake Thomas wants his study-abroad experience to be different and out of the ordinary. The first place that popped up in his mind was a country several thousand miles away from his home — India.
The business major has a keen interest in understanding how business is conducted in India and bringing home some unique skills. He is eyeing the Social Entrepreneurship course in the UI India Winterim program.

Join independent researcher and documentary filmmaker Yousuf Saeed as he discusses his work on the visual, artistic, and religious cultural heritage of India in two separate presentations on the UI campus. The first presentation features the screening of “Four Short Documentaries on Popular Islam in India,” followed by a discussion with Saeed, and will take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in E105 AJB (Adler Journalism and Mass Communication Building).
SPAN Magazine: Bridging U.S.-India Relations-a publication produced by the U.S. Embassy in New Dehli- recently released an article on the University of Iowa's India Winterim Program. This 3-week UI course offers students an opportunity to study and participate with grass-roots organizations in India focused on social entrepreneurship, sustainability, public health and more.
Madhavapeddi Murthy, Dancers and Orchestra will be in residence April 16-20 within the UI Department of Dance and UI School of Music. Murthy and his troupe will culminate their residency Friday, April 20, with an open lecture demonstration followed by a public performance at the Space Place Theater.
Autobiography is Another Story: “Lives” in Hindi
Abstract: Hindi has a rich tradition of writing about the self – both in formal autobiography (atmakatha, ap-biti) and in more casual contexts and genres. This talk discusses a dozen works, ranging from self-consciously literary texts to the transcribed memoirs of a provincial station-master. Themes such as family life and childhood memories illuminate these narratives, while darker moments include jail writings by the sometime prime minister Chandrashekhar (imprisoned and released by Indira Gandhi during the Emergency of the 1970s) and by Ramprasad Bismil (imprisoned and executed by the British a half-century earlier). My spotlight is on the stylistics of the narratives: how do the various authors crystalize their sweet and bitter experiences into words and bring them to the printed page?
By the time the group of 60 students from the University of Iowa left the Temple Town last week, it was amply clear to them that the field of elementary studies does not limit itself to field trips in one’s own country. “It is also about encountering people and their communities far beyond borders.”
Ten students who spent three weeks in the different campuses of the Mahatma group of schools took back with them loads of information about India, and particularly small town Madurai. But what touched their hearts the most was an appreciation for them from all and also some continued questions about each other. That was true knowledge gained.
In order to provide on-the-ground support for existing and future activities in India, the University of Iowa has partnered with GenNext Education to benefit from office space and staff support at their International Knowledge Center (IKC) in Bangalore, India. The IKC functions as the UI’s India liaison office, providing support in south India and throughout the country for linkages with businesses and educational institutions, study abroad partnerships, service-learning and internship programs, recruitment efforts to bring highly-qualified Indian students to Iowa, and to strengthen connections to friends and alumni.
