University of Iowa Credit Courses Fall 2014. The courses listed on this page are all University of Iowa-for credit courses offered in collaboration with the Confucius Institute. These courses are open to University of Iowa students. Students wishing to take these courses must enroll though the University of Iowa's enrollment system on ISIS.
Scholarship for Summer Chinese Language Study: The Confucius Institute at the University of Iowa is pleased to announce the Confucius Institute Summer Chinese Language Study Scholarship. 039:003 Beginning Chinese I This is the first course of a three course series of beginning Chinese offered through the Confucius Institute at the University of Iowa and designed for students who have little or no Chinese language background. The purpose of this course is to lay groundwork for the study of modern Chinese. The course will provide instruction in all four language skills of aurally understanding, speaking, reading and writing.
Successful completion of this course will qualify the student to enroll in 039:004 Beginning Chinese II. This course is NOT an approved GE foreign language course. There are no prerequisites for this course. Students will earn 3 semester hours for the completion of this course.

Tuition and materials Tuition will be calculated in accordance with University of Iowa policy and paid through the University of Iowa system. Materials $100 total for: Introduction to Standard Chinese Pinyin System textbook, Contemporary Chinese 1 book set $75. Materials must be purchased from the Confucius Institute before the starting date of the course.
039:004 Beginning Chinese II Prerequisite: 039:003 Beginning Chinese I or equivalent as demonstrated in written and oral exams.
This class is designed for students who have successfully completed 039:003 Beginning Chinese I or equivalent. This course will help advance learners’ knowledge of Modern Standard Chinese to a higher level. It adopts multi-approach methods to enhance language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing and to improve the cultural knowledge as related to the language. Classroom instruction will be centered on developing communicative ability. Successful completion of the course will allow the students to engage in real-life tasks appropriately and effectively, both in a linguistically and cultural sense. Successful completion of this course will qualify the student to enroll in 039:010 Beginning Chinese III. A placement test is required if the students wish to enroll in 039:009 First year Chinese: Second Semester.

039:118 Business Chinese II Prerequisites: 039:116 (CHIN:3102) or 039:117 (CHIN:3103)
This is an intermediate level business Chinese class designed for Business college students with two-years of Chinese studies or equivalent who plan to pursue a career in business transactions or are interested in up-to-date topics in China’s economic development. It focuses on practical language skills and timeless business knowledge and provides the learners with practical, motivating business Chinese materials which are helpful in real business.
Upon completion, students who pass placement test will be enrolled in 039:128:001 Fourth Year Chinese, First semester
