Fall 2014 Faculty Research Grant

The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) is pleased to invite applications from UI faculty engaged in research on East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region. Grants will not exceed $3,000. Recipients are encouraged to supplement their awards with funds from other sources. Funds will be available immediately upon notification of award and should be used before December 31, 2014 unless prior approval is obtained.

Guidelines

  1. Competition is open to all tenured and tenure-track faculty at the University of Iowa, whose research primarily focuses on the cultures, societies, and institutions of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region.
  2. Funds are to be used for research-related expenses other than for travel to conferences and faculty salary.
  3. Applicants whose proposed budget includes international travel expenses must also submit a proposal for International Travel funds to the UI International Travel Grant Committee. Obtain a grant application from International Program's Grants Department.
  4. Faculty are eligible for no more than one CAPS grant per academic year.
  5. Faculty members who have received start-up money from CAPS must use this funding before they may become eligible for CAPS research grants.
  6. Faculty who receive CAPS research grant are encouraged to make a presentation at a CAPS research seminar.
  7. The maximum grant award is $3,000.

  • Proposal of approximately 750 words describing the purposes and intellectual rationale of the research project
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • One page budget, including other sources of funding, if applicable

Fall 2014 Graduate Dissertation Grant

The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) is pleased to announce the availability of research grants for UI graduate students engaged in research on the cultures and institutions of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region.

Application Deadline

October 17, 2014 

Guidelines

  1. The grant is for Ph. D candidates who have passed their prelims or comprehensives exams and are starting their dissertation research. Ordinarily the grant will not exceed $1,500 and are to be used for research-related expenses including travel to libraries and archives both inside and outside the United States.
  2. An applicant is limited to one CAPS dissertation award per academic year and preference may be given to applicants who have not previously received this award.
  3. Funds will be available immediately upon notification of the award and should be used before December 31, 2014 unless prior approval is obtained.
  4. In addition to dissertation awards, small travel grants of up to $500 are available to doctoral candidates to present papers at academic conferences. Each grantee is eligible to no more than one supplemental grant each year.
  5. Applicants are encouraged to supplement CAPS grants with other sources.

  • One page budget, including other sources of funding, if applicable;
  • A letter of endorsement from dissertation advisor.

Scholarships for Study Abroad in East Asia for Summer and Fall 2014 is available for undergraduate students attending the University of Iowa.
