The Conference:
The conference embraces a large, diversified, and interdisciplinary group of scholars of African, Brazilian, and Portuguese studies. The work of internationally acclaimed Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges will be celebrated at the Inaugural Conference of the UI Borges Center, titled "The Place of Letters: The World in Borges," Wednesday, April 11, through Saturday, April 14 in the Old Capitol Museum. The events are free and open to the public. This conference is a University of Iowa International Programs' Major Projects Grant funded conference. The conference features scholars from around the world speaking about the work, life, and legacy of Jorge Luis Borges, one of the most famous Latin American writers of the 20th century. Evelyn Fishburn, professor of Latin American literature at the University of London, will open with a keynote address at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12 in the Old Capitol Senate Chamber. Other speakers include Sylvia Molloy, professor of humanities at New York University; Julio Premat from Université de Paris-VIII; David Oubiña, professor of cinema and letters at Universidad de Buenos Aires-Universidad del Cine; and Buzz Spector, art professor at Cornell University. UI sponsors include: International Programs, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the Latin American Studies Program, the Department of Cinema and Comparative Literature, and the Arts and Humanities Initiative.
